Moosehead Lake Scenic Byway

The Moosehead Lake Scenic Byway travels for 59 miles from Greenville to Jackman on Route 6/15. It travels along the shores of Moosehead Lake for a good part of the journey. For those that prefer low-traffic rural drives, this is the ideal byway. In this area, moose outnumber people three to one.

Moosehead Lake is the largest mountain lake in the eastern United States. It is the source of the Kennebec River and is located in the Longfellow Mountains three hours north of Portland. Swim, fish, take a steamboat ride on the lake, kayak, canoe, or paddleboard. These are just some of the activities that await those who visit.

Stargazing is one of the popular activities along this byway as there is little or no light pollution. The Northern Lights are often visible in the area as well. If you are looking for a longer drive, you can connect this drive with The Old Canada Road National Scenic Byway at Jackman.

Mt Kineo State Park in Rockwood is a popular destination along this route as it offers stunning views and more than 6 miles of hiking trails. You can also enjoy golf at the Mt Kineo Golf Course.
