MORE INFORMATION: History: In 1963, a B-52 bomber crashed on Elephant Island. The B-52 was performing a training exercise when the crash occurred and only two survived. The original wreckage site has been preserved and is an outdoor exhibit that is held by Moosehead Lake Aviation & B-52 Museum. The Moosehead Lake Aviation & B-52 Museum opened in 2011 and is part of the Moosehead Historical Society’s museum collection.
Collections and Highlights: A commemoration of the B-52 Bomber that crashed in 1963 on Elephant Mountain is on display outside and accessible by foot (in the warmer weather) or snowmobile (in the winter). Original items including the parachute used during ejection and the pilot’s seat are part of the B-52 display. Additionally, the museum holds B-52 photo albums, artifacts, and scrapbooks. The history of personal and commercial aircraft and bush pilot history is part of the collection.
