SUMMARY: The Blackwoods Scenic Byway is a 12.5-mile drive on Route 182 between Franklin and Cherryfield. If you take the trip in July or August, you can enjoy the wild blueberries in Cherryfield, which is the wild blueberry capital of the world. Along the way, you will pass Tunk Lake and Long Pond, both of which have boat launches. Hiking trails are easily accessed from along the byway.
Franklin and Cherryfield both offer interesting places to visit and lovely 18th and 19th-century architecture. Cherryfield has festivals, shopping, a B&B that offers English tea, a winery, and an alpaca farm. Opportunities abound for enjoying the outdoors to swim, fish, enjoy wildlife viewing, paddle, camp, and swim. Bring along binoculars to keep an eye out for bald eagles and great gray owls.
Tunk Mountain and Hidden Ponds Trails offer 4.4 miles of trails and are a unique nature area with mountain fishing, diverse views, and plenty of opportunities for moderate to difficult hikes. You can avoid the steep mountain hiking by heading toward Mud Pond.
