History: The Vinalhaven Historical Society was established in 1963. It is housed in a former Universalist Church that was built in 1836 in Rockland, Maine. The church was sold in 1875 and moved to Vinalhaven. Vinalhaven used the building as the town hall, starting in 1868. The building was also a town meeting spot, a youth center, and then, in 1967, became the home of the Historical Society.
Collections and Highlights: The collection includes photographs, genealogical documents, vital records, Civil War artifacts, and farming tools. School and household artifacts from around Vinalhaven are also on display, as well as exhibits about the granite industry and fishing.
Exhibitions, Events & Programs: The museum has a different seasonal exhibit each year. Past exhibits have included baseball, buoys and the Civil War.
