SUMMARY: Traveler Mountain, located in Baxter State Park, features a couple of challenging trails for avid hikers. The hike will bring you to an elevation of 3,700 feet, which is just 400 feet shorter than the famous Mount Katahdin. Trails are located in a quieter section of the park and can sometimes be difficult to find. Be sure to bring proper hiking gear and sturdy footwear for changing weather conditions and terrain. Baxter State Park does not allow dogs.
MORE INFORMATION: Best Time to Visit: The best time to hike is from late spring to early fall. These trails can be slippery in icy or wet conditions, so it is best to avoid winter days and rainy days.

Parking: There is a fee to enter Baxter State Park for the day. Parking can be found just north of South Branch Pond Campground via Matagamon Gate (northeast part of the park).
Trails & Maps:
- The Traveler Loop (Map): This trail is a 9.6 mile loop that crosses three summits, Traveler, North Traveler and Peak of the Ridges. Hikers will cross Pogy Notch and Center Ridge Trails. The trail is marked, but sometimes the marks are difficult to see as they are painted on rocks and/or trees. The terrain can be difficult and features many rocky areas, scrambles, forests, overgrown bushes and brush. This trail is best for experienced hikers.
- North Traveler Mountain (Map):Â This 5 mile, out and back, hike is challenging. It features false summits along the trail, but the true summit of North Traveler Mountain has panoramic, unobstructed views. The descent of the mountain can be difficult and hiking poles are highly recommended for stability. Terrain includes rocky scrambles, steep climbs, loose stone, and forest.
