MORE INFORMATION: History: Built in 1897, the Thomas Hill Standpipe is still in operation. It was built as water storage for fighting fires and to maintain water pressure in downtown Bangor. The standpipe holds 1.5 million gallons of water. The actual standpipe is 50 feet tall and constructed of metal. The exterior is a 110-foot wooden structure. Between the tank and the wooden cover, there is a stairway that takes you up to the promenade deck at the top.
