SUMMARY: The Turrets is a beautiful French Chateau-style historical building. The mansion is now part of the College of the Atlantic as a classroom and office building. Visitors are welcome to view the exterior of the building and should check with the College of the Atlantic prior to visiting the interior.
MORE INFORMATION: History: The Turrets was designed and built from 1893-1895 to serve as a summer retreat mansion for wealthy businessman, John J. Emery. The mansion was purchased by the College of the Atlantic in 1973. Today, it is a College of the Atlantic academic and administrative building. The Turrets Seaside Garden was designed in 2005 by a College of the Atlantic student. The garden is 4,000 square feet and was previously a tennis court.
Gardens: Another can't miss feature of the Turrets is the Turrets Seaside Garden. The sunken garden, located behind the Turrets, includes a granite bench with Frenchman Bay island and garden views, a fountain, flowers and plants in subtle colors. Depending on the season, you may see dahlias, roses, delphinium, harebells and other flowers that grow in Maine's climate.
