SUMMARY: The Temple at Old Orchard Beach is the only octagonal church in the state of Maine. Locals also refer to The Temple as the Ocean Park Temple. The Temple is located in Temple Square. The structure is two story wood-frame with a hipped roof. Inside, the church is no frills with original wooden supports and an organ. The church is a summer worship space open to the public on Sundays. It can also be rented for special events such as weddings.
MORE INFORMATION: History: The Temple was built in 1881 as part of a summer camp community. It was built for the Free Will Baptists in the area. Former Bates College President, Oren Cheney, led the church community for many years. The architect for the octagonal structure was Dow and Wheeler, a firm that had built other octagonal structures in Maine. Dow and Wheeler designed the building and James Bickford of Portland was hired as the builder.
Surprisingly, the interior has not needed many refurbishments over the years. There was an addition in 1927 which allowed more seating and then another addition in 1986. The church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
