SUMMARY: The Brothers refers to a pair of mountains, North Brother and South Brother, located in Baxter State Park. Hikers can reach the summit of both Brothers in one lengthy hike. Views from the summit of both mountains are gorgeous year-round. Be sure to bring a map along for the hike, as some sections of the trail are not well-marked. Many hikers also suggest wearing long sleeves and pants for protection against the brush and bugs. Note that dogs are not permitted in Baxter State Park.
MORE INFORMATION: Best Time to Visit: The best time to hike is from mid-May to mid-October. The weather is typically milder, and there’s no threat of icy conditions.
Season/Hours of Operation: Baxter State Park is open from 6 AM to 10 PM but is only staffed from 8 AM to 4 PM.
Parking: Baxter State Park charges an admittance fee. Visitors can pay for a day or a seasonal pass.
Trails:
- The Brothers, Fort Mountain, and Mount Coe Loop: This 11-mile loop is considered challenging and best for experienced hikers. It is recommended that the hike be done counterclockwise, starting with climbing Mount Coe first. Terrain can be tricky with exposed rocky slides at Mount Coe. There are also rocky sections leading to the summit of South Brother. Additional terrain includes rivers, forests, gravel, scrambles, thick brush, and downed trees.
- North and South Brother via Marston Trail: This hike is just over 10 miles, out and back, and includes the two peaks of North and South Brother. Views from the summit include Mount Katahdin and beautiful valleys. The terrain is challenging and includes rocky scrambles, forest, a lake, and slippery rocks.
