"Critical area" means any natural area documented by the Natural Areas Program that is conserved or protected in its natural condition through voluntary action.
The rocks here are more impressive than the waterfall. Through a unique erosion process, the boulders have been smoothed and carved to look more like Swiss cheese. A series of small waterfalls into (three) pools make this a popular swimming or sunning area. It's also a tremendous stop to see fall foliage.
Pets are allowed on a leash or under voice control, but with roadside parking, a leash is the best idea.
The Swift River is just a few feet from the parking area. The path is mixed dirt, rocks, and leaves until the rocks meet the woods.
The waterfall is on town property and is considered one of the scenic features that draw people here, so don't worry about if you have the right to be there. This is one of the reasons the leaders of Roxbury want people to visit.
Waterfall Safety
Your biggest concerns here are slippery rocks and the river current. At times of heavy flow, the water won't be safe to enter.
You can see from this USGS photo that the rocks might be slippery and contain trip hazards due to erosion potholes across the bedrock.
Use extra caution when you're walking where the woods meet the rocks, as you could be stepping into a hole that is covered with plants or tall grass.
Even with a roadside attraction, you should still plan to be inundated with bugs when it's warm outside. Use bug spray and do a tick check before you get back in the car.
Don't drink the water from the river as it can contain harmful bacteria.
Parking at Waterfall
Parking is free alongside the road. From ME 17 and ME 2 in Mexico, Maine, drive 6.9 miles north. Once you're past River Street, you're just 1,400 feet away. You'll see a parking area marked by boulders lining the path.
