History: The Stanley Museum was established in 1981 and is housed in the Stanley School, which was built in 1903. The Stanley family has a rich history that the museum has captured. The Stanley twins, Francis Edgar (F.E.) and Freelan Oscar (F.O.) invented and manufactured the “Stanley Steamer” automobile. Sister, Chansonetta was a photographer who captured American life.
Collections and Highlights: The museum holds a vast automobile collection. The collection includes a steam car, a boiler and burner exhibit, a 20hp Stanley engine, and a Mason Regulator engine. Numerous photographs detailing the Stanley steam engine's history are on display. The family room includes black and white photographs, the Stanley Dry Plate Company history, vintage cameras, and more. The museum keeps the largest collection of Chansonetta’s prints and glass plate negatives. Chansonetta’s daughter, Dorothy Stanley Emmons, was a renowned painter and her paintings are also on display. The museum also holds a collection of violins that F.O. and F.E., and their nephew Carlton, designed and crafted.
