SUMMARY: St. Anne's Church & Mission is one of the oldest Catholic Churches in the area. The wooden church dates from about 1830 and the cemetery from the 17th century.
MORE INFORMATION: History: The original mission was established in 1668 and staffed by a Canadian missionary in 1688 to minister to the Penobscot Indians. It is still located on the Penobscot Indian Island Reservation. The building is single-story with clapboard siding. In the 20th century, a new elaborate tower was erected in the front of the church with a fanlight window on the 2nd level and Palladian windows on the fourth level. It now shares its priest with Old Town and Bradley.
The church has a treasure, a painting of Jesus' crucifixion crafted by a Native American artist using all-natural ingredients. The image is at least 200 years old. St. Anne's Church was listed on the Register of Historic Places in 1973.
