History: The Somesville Museum was built in 1981. The Mount Desert Island Historical Society maintains and operates the museum. They’ve been in existence since 1931. The Selectmen’s Building was built in the 1780s by an early settler, John Somes. It has had many purposes throughout the years, including a cobbler’s shop, museum, town office, and post office.
Collections and Highlights: The collection includes the W.H. Ballard collection of 800 photographs, Champlain Society logs and journals, World War II textiles, architectural blueprints, books, and many miscellaneous artifacts.
Exhibitions, Events & Programs: The Mount Desert Island Historical Society holds history talks, book clubs, baked bean suppers, and History Happy Hour.
