Maine really has a way of making rest areas worth visiting, and the Snow Falls Rest Area in West Paris is no different.

The waterfall is in a gorge, and the expansive options of scenic viewpoints, bridges, and trails give great visual points. There are some safety railings, but still plenty of steep drop access points without railings.
Summer visitors will see a lackluster waterfall but still beautiful surroundings. Spring brings the beastly rush of the water, while fall dots the landscape with a colorful palette of foliage.
This is truly a great place to stretch your legs on a road trip or enjoy a roadside picnic with the falls in the background. Restrooms and picnic tables are available.
While dogs can be on a leash or under voice control, the parking area is right alongside a major road. It's smart to keep pets on a leash until you get farther away from the road. However, the steep cliffs of the gorge make a leash helpful for the entire stop.
Waterfall Safety
For someone using all the standard precautions, your biggest risk here will be the bugs in warmer months. Wear sunscreen and check for ticks if you walk near the woods.
This isn't a good swimming hole because of the currents and various layers of the falls. You can monitor the currents and water height here.
The unfenced areas around the falls are tempting for those who want to get a closer look. Several accidents have happened here, including a teenager who went cliff jumping and landed on a rock. Another involved a 15-year-old girl who slipped 30 feet from a cliff and into the cold water. She went to the hospital with hypothermia.
You have to watch your footing here and avoid walking across the stone ledges that cross over the water.
No matter how dangerous it can be now, it's not nearly as bad as in 1824, when Captain Snow met an untimely and gruesome death at the hands of Indigenous People.
Parking at Waterfall
Snow Falls is your standard Department of Transportation rest stop with free parking. It's not a parking lot but more of a pull-in, pull-out parking area.
