SUMMARY: Sieur de Monts is a whole area of the park that is often called the “Heart of Acadia”. Sieur de Monts includes a Nature Center, a spring and spring house, a tarn, Great Meadow Wetlands, trails and paths, and the Wild Gardens of Acadia. The Nature Center has beautiful nature displays detailing the science and beauty of Acadia. Visitors can learn about the park’s history, the park's biologists, natural resources, and the preservation of the park. Stop by to get a Nature Center stamp in your passport book too. A large map with park information and history is at the Wild Gardens of Acadia display. Visitors can also enjoy peaceful trail walks, birdwatching, and the natural beauty of the area.
MORE INFORMATION: History: George B. Dorr was a major benefactor and contributor to Acadia National Park. He built the Sieur de Monts Spring House in 1909. The Sieur de Monts area was named for a French noble person named Pierre Du Gua de Monts.
Collections and Highlights: The Nature Center has a collection of displays relating to Acadia National Park’s history, environment, biology, and wildlife. There are also maps of the park and area for visitors to explore. The Sieur de Monts Spring House has memorials and placards for visitors to read and learn about the park.
