Screw Auger Falls

Screw Auger Falls in Grafton Township is a dog-friendly waterfall on the Bear River. This is not the same Screw Auger Falls as you'll find in the challenging Gulf Hagas hike.

Screw Auger Falls is in Grafton Notch State Park. The waterfall and swimming area are usually crowded when it's hot outside. If you're looking for solitude, this isn't the place. You might have better luck at Mother Walker Falls, just up the road, but it's not nearly as welcoming of a swimming hole.

Here you have scenic viewpoints, flat bedrock, and swimming holes surrounding the falls. Interpretive panels along the way explain the geological formation of the falls.

Pit toilets are available for people, and you should pick up and carry pet waste with you until you leave the park. As a state park, there aren't trash cans here. You carry out what you bring in.

Maine state parks do require that dogs be on a leash at all times.

This waterfall is wonderful in all seasons, with spring fury as the snow melts from higher elevations, summer swimming, and fall foliage.

Waterfall Safety

The initial concern here is the steepness of the gorge, as not all areas have a railing. Even with the railing, it's nothing a small child or pet couldn't squeeze through or under.

You really have to watch your footing on the slick rocks while keeping situational awareness of the people around you. It's not just important that you walk safely; they have to as well.

Photos and videos of the trail might make it seem less "buggy," but don't skimp on bug spray. Especially in the nearby wooded areas, the ticks, mosquitoes, biting flies, and dragonflies will be hungry for you and your pet. Take precautions and look for ticks after your swim.

Don't drink the water from the Bear River. It can have its own contaminants, but with this many people swimming, you can bet there will be waste in the water as well.

There are spots in this area that go through narrow rocks. Some people seek these out to avoid the crowds but watch your head while avoiding any tripping hazards in the water.

Parking at Waterfall

There is a parking area right by the falls that is free with admission to the state park. Here's a park guide to help you out. Admission is $4 at most for out-of-state residents. The parking lot is large, but it can fill up quickly. No parking is allowed on the main road. If you don't get there early, you could be in for a long walk to get there.
