Sand Beach – Bar Harbor

Sand Beach in Bar Harbor is actually one of the stunning beaches of Acadia National Park. It is a dog-friendly part of the year with some specific summer allowances we need to discuss.

Sand Beach in Acadia National Park Dog-Friendly Details

Sand Beach is popular for several reasons:

• It is close to the main entrance of the park
• It's a large, shell-based sandy beach
• It's the start of the Ocean Path Trail through Thunder Hole, Otter Cliffs, and Otter Point

You will need to pay a park pass fee to get to this beach.

June 15 - September 8

During this time of year, dogs are not allowed to frolic on the beach. The only exception is for dogs that are on a leash and being walked across the beach to Ocean Path Trail.

September 9 - June 14

Pets are allowed on the beach provided they are on a leash no longer than six feet in length. The leash must be held by a person at all times.

You are required to pick up pet waste immediately and dispose of it in the proper trash can. Do not bag and drop or plan to "come back for it later." If the tide sweeps the waste away, then you've just made the water quality less safe for people and animals.

Guests are not allowed to leave pets in vehicles, especially in the summer heat. Even leaving a window cracked isn't acceptable.

SET A GOOD EXAMPLE: If you exhibit all the qualities of a responsible owner, your dog could become a BARK Ranger!

While pet waste bags are provided in the parking area, you should never assume those will be freshly stocked. Bring your own supply with you. Public restrooms are available in the parking area with access to drinking water.

NOTE: The restrooms could be closed during the "non-swimming designation" timeframe from September 9 - June 14.

Is Sand Beach at Acadia National Park Safe for Dogs?

This is one of the safer places since it's close to the entrance, has plenty of people around in every season, and is far away from the main Park Loop Road.

The sandy beach does have a mix of shells in it, which could become embedded in paws or injure paw pads. Just do periodic paw checks to be sure. The sand/shells can also be slippery, so watch your step.

Know the tide schedules, and don't assume this pocket beach is free from current concerns. The bulletin board at the entrance will have the water temperature of the day. The warmest it will get is around 60°(F).

Parking at Sand Beach in Acadia National Park

There's a large lot at Sand Beach, but it fills up quickly any time of year since it's the first stop and connected to the trail system. You can also consider using the Island Explorer bus system to get around. It is pet-friendly, but check the restrictions on the website.
