Sand Beach at Branch Lake is one of three swimming spots in the town of Ellsworth, also known as the entrance to Mount Desert Island. Dogs are welcome with a few restrictions.

It's important to note that Branch Lake is the public water supply for the town. That means any access rules could change. The strict boating requirements show just how protected this water is from contamination.
The animal control ordinance states that dogs must be on a leash no more than eight feet long at all properties within the commercial district and downtown. School and library properties are also mentioned. There is no allowance or banning of dogs at the three swimming areas in Ellsworth.
Please follow the most recent signs at the beach for dog access. If your dog has been dealing with digestion issues, don't let them in the water to avoid impacting water quality.
All pet waste must be cleaned up immediately and bagged. The bagged waste must then be disposed of in a trash can.
The beach is open from 8 am to 8 pm year-round. Access is free and portable toilets are on site. You can enjoy the picnic area with leashed dogs. There isn't a lifeguard on duty at any time.
Is Sand Beach at Branch Lake Safe for Dogs?
Your dog can do more damage to the water quality than the lake could do to your dog, but it's important to check the weather forecasts. Avoid the water on windy days or when storms are in the forecast.
Always bring your own drinking water for pets and people. Don't rely on the town to provide pet waste bags.
SAFETY NOTE: Branch Lake can be subject to algae blooms, which are common in Maine. People exposed to this can become slightly ill. Dogs can die within hours. Please check lake water quality before you let a pet anywhere near the water in the warmer months.
The beach is a mix of sand and boulders. Watch your step on rocks, as they can be slippery when wet.

The free parking is just a short walk from the beach. Follow all parking signs and don't park on public roadsides if not allowed, and don't park on private property.

Mill Pond Park is another water access area at Branch Lake. There's also Nicolin Park at Green Lake, just northeast of Branch Lake. Branch Lake Public Forest weaves through the woods before reaching another waterfront spot along the lake.
