History: The Sail, Power, and Steam Museum was established in 2007. A sea captain, Jim Sharp, and his wife Meg were collectors of sea vessels for many years. They decided to purchase property to house their growing collection.
Collections and Highlights: The impressive collection includes navigational tools, radar, photographs of shipwrecks, steam engines, The Payson Boat Shed houses small vessels that are native to Maine. The boat collection also includes sailboats from the 19th century, a cement vessel, Optimist Prams, and even remote-control boats. The highlight of the museum is the Schooner GEM on Penobscot Bay. This schooner is available to tour and even available to rent for special occasions.
Exhibitions, Events & Programs: The museum holds concerts, Captain speaker programs, Sunday Music Jams (bring your own instrument), and other fun events. Music Jams are every Sunday from 1 PM - 4 PM, year-round. The MidCoast Sailing Center at the museum has personalized instruction on various topics like navigation, sailing, reading nautical charts, and kids' lessons.
Tours: Group tours are available. Contact the museum to schedule a tour. Special tours are also available including Maine Heritage Tours, Steam Engine Tours, Lime History Tours, Navigation Tours, and more.
