Rumford Falls is a dog-friendly waterfall in Rumford, Maine, but this is one where you can only look and not touch. The "look" is well worth it.

The falls are on the mighty Androscoggin River. You might first think, "Wait, that's just a dam." Look closer. The upper falls are a natural feature. Even with the 176-foot drop that technically exists, the dams used to power the mills and electrical systems have diverted the flow and fantastic potential of the falls.
There are three sections of the falls, all of which have great viewpoints. Rumford's laws state that a dog must be under control on a leash or confined within a car when in a public place. It's probably a good idea since you'll be walking on busy roads to get the best views.
Park at J. Eugene Boivin Park in Rumford to see the middle and upper falls. They are most impressive in springtime. By the height of summer, the falls are at their lowest. The lower falls are less than half a mile north.

Waterfall Safety
You won't have to worry about walking on slippery rocks here, as the access points are on paved parking areas or sidewalks. There are some grassy picnic spots along the way.
Plan for bugs in the warmer months. Wear bug spray and keep your pet protected as well.
Some of the vantage points have a railing that prevents you from getting too close but heed all warning signs about the risk of rising water.
Never go onto private property to get closer to the falls, and don't attempt to swim in the river since it's powered by a major dam that could easily lead to catastrophe.
Parking at Waterfall
All the parking areas are free but don't use the library parking lot to get closer to the falls. Instead, use the public parking lot at Portland Street and River Street.
If you stop at Boivin Park, you'll be able to visit the information center and see the Paul Bunyan statue, a popular roadside attraction. However, this isn't THE Paul Bunyan statue immortalized in Stephen King's It. That one is in Bangor.
