Pond Farm State Wildlife Management Area is 450 acres of Little Seboeis Lake which was drained in the 1800s, so the land could be used for agricultural purposes. It is located in the northwest corner of Howland, ME in Penobscot County. The draining was illegal, and the state retained ownership of the land. In 1981 the boundaries of the wildlife management area were designated.
Four hundred nine acres of the land are wetlands which include wet meadows, marsh, shrub, wooded swamp, and bog. The remaining uplands feature mixed woods, softwoods, and aspen. It is used by waterfowl for breeding and during migration. The wetland is home to muskrats, amphibians, beaver, and shorebirds. The uplands support deer, ruffled grouse, black bears, and migrating woodcock. It is possible to see bald eagles and osprey and birdwatching is enjoyed here.
The object is to maintain a breeding place at Pond Farm for waterfowl and this is done through control of water levels, and creating the right environment. A 2.5-acre goose pasture is being created and will be maintained. A boat launch is located at the old dam site and hunting for waterfowl and fishing for bullhead and pickerel is enjoyed by locals.
