History: The Piscataquis Agricultural Society was incorporated in 1840. The first fair was held on a Tuesday in October 1841 in Guilford on the farm of Joseph Kelsey. In 1842, it was in Sangerville, and in 1844 in Dover Village. The first Fair of the Piscataquis Agricultural Society was held in 1901.
In 1927 a group applied to the State to rename the Fair The Piscataquis Valley Fair Association. More land has been acquired and the buildings on the land updated over the years. The fair continues to grow and improve with every passing year.
Month Held: The Piscataquis Valley Fair is held the last weekend of August from Thursday to Sunday.
Attractions: No Maine agricultural fair would be without their steer, horse, and ox pull. But today they have added the mechanical pulls as well, truck pulls, farm tractor pulls, and garden tractor pulls. Even the kids get in on it with the pedal tractor pull at the milking parlor. Animal land is a great way to introduce the little ones to farm animals.
Milking Parlor Demonstrations take place every day and the Ice Cream Parlor is located in the Milking Parlor. This popular attraction serves all your favorite ice cream treats created with Gifford Ice Cream which is made in Maine.
The Mechanical Track offers Figure 8 Race, Tuff Truck, and the truck and tractor pulls. Take part in the 50/50 Raffle daily. Fireworks take place on Thursday night. The Fire Dept. Museum is an educational experience not to be missed. The Exhibition Hall is the home to the flower show, handcrafts, food needlework, and produce. The kids will enjoy decorating cookies. Ribbons and prizes are awarded. Live shows take place on the stage and in the Gazebo. Get the family together and join in the Karaoke.
Bob's Sugar House offers homemade fudge and maple sugar candy. The Fair Food Booth serves breakfast every morning from 6-11 am, coffee, Juice, full breakfast - eggs, bacon, sausage, home fries. Lunch and dinner is also offered, burgers, hotdogs, sausage, friends, homemade pies, chicken fingers and more.
Miss Maple Pageant will take place on Saturday morning at 10 am on the stage. Contestants are categorized by age. Take part in the Free bicycle and backpack drawing daily at the fair office. The pig scramble is fun to watch. Don't miss the youth and adult livestock shows. Lots of contests are offed including wrist wrestling contest, three-legged race, relay race, Frisbee toss, ladies skillet toss, cornhole tournament, and frog jumping contest. Carnival rides, games of chance and food vendors are all part of the fair experience.
