History: The Rockland Airport had a portion of undeveloped land at the end of a runway that Knox County purchased. Originally, the land was to be an industrial park but residents were not happy with that plan. Owls Head established the nonprofit museum that was opened in 1974. The museum was initially funded and designed by Jim Rockefeller, Tom Watson, and Steve Lang.
Collections and Highlights: The collection includes more than 150 restored vehicles, bicycles, motorcycles, aircraft, engines, and other artifacts. Aircraft in the collection date from the 1900 - 1930s. Automobiles include the 1902 Oldsmobile Model R, 1904 Stanley B, 1904 Mercedes Simplex 40/50, 1903 Prescott 10c, 1907 Cadillac K, Stanley Model K, and many other Cadillacs, Buicks, Rolls-Royce, and Fords dating from the 1880s-1960s. Bicycles in the collection date from the 1800s - 1940, while motorcycles date from 1869 - 1965. The collection also holds antique engines and carriages.
Exhibitions, Events & Programs: The museum hosts exhibitions including Fads & Failures, The Great War, The Road to Vacationland, Women Who Dare, and many other interesting topics. The museum runs community events like STEM Saturdays, social events, and school vacation camps.
