Getting to Markey Beach on Matinicus Island

Since the island is so remote, you have to plan well ahead of time and choose the best option for your family, freight, and four-legged friend.

Maine Ferry

The Maine ferry makes trips to Matinicus out of Rockland, but check the time frame between each trip. During the off-season and shoulder seasons, that trip could be twice a month. On the day of arrival, the ferry leaves after an hour at the dock, leaving a day trip as not an option. During high season, the ferry arrives and departs four times a month.

NOTE: All ferry trips happen at high tide and are dependent on the weather.

The trip lasts about two hours, and dogs are allowed in special pet-friendly cabins and must stay on a leash or be in a carrier. If you are bringing a car to the island, that requires advance planning and coordination.

Matinicus Excursions

This private boat company offers trips to the island. One dog (and cat) are allowed per trip without an extra charge, but if your dog weighs more than 100 pounds, or you have more than one dog, you'll need to negotiate that with the captain ahead of time.

Flying Into Matinicus

Penobscot Air also has flights to the island, and dogs are allowed but will be priced as freight. Please coordinate with your vet and the airline before committing to the flight.

Markey Beach Dog-Friendly Details

Matinicus Plantation is the governing body of the island, but there aren't specific dog rules or bans. You should always keep your dog on a leash unless you are 100% sure you can let them off leash, and they'll behave under strict voice control when not harnessed.

We cannot stress this enough—Matinicus is rustic and rugged. Not in that cute, charming way, but in a "tap the adventurer inside of you" way. Public toilets, air conditioning (or heating), and restaurants aren't to be found here. There are some seasonal rentals, but you should be sure to ask about the intricacies of indoor plumbing. Markey Beach is a blend of every landscape that makes Maine awesome. From the sandy shores to the rugged rocks to the pine trees that dot the horizon in every direction except for the infinity edge of the ocean with a few spots of islands on the horizon.

Unless your dog is really annoying to other people, an off-leash allowance is acceptable.

Is Markey Beach Safe for Dogs?

Dogs are going to adapt easier than humans since you'll be the one carrying all the goods, including pet waste bags, drinking water, snacks, and towels. You'll be expected to take all the trash you create out with you.

The water is going to be cold, even in summer. You should know the signs of dog hypothermia. Don't let dogs drink the saltwater, as it can make them sick, and you are hours from any pet care here (on a good day with excellent weather).
