SUMMARY: Maine has a storied history around shipbuilding, marine life, and fishing. The Maine Maritime Academy was established to formalize training and education for students interested in becoming engineering officers and trained deck crew. Today, the Maine Maritime Academy offers degrees in four fields of maritime study, including marine sciences, marine transportation, engineering, and international business. They also offer graduate programs in logistics and maritime management. Graduates typically join the armed forces or the Merchant Marines. The campus is located on the waterfront and has many ships to view from the docks.
MORE INFORMATION: History: In 1941, the 90th Maine Legislature created the Maine Maritime Academy to provide formal maritime training for interested students. The first class at Maine Maritime consisted of 29 students. The first ship used for training at the academy was the Mattie and the class reported to Rear Admiral Douglas Dismukes, who was a WWI veteran. In 1943, the Maine Maritime Academy graduated its first class. Many graduates saw action during WWII.
Visiting the Campus: Visitors are welcome to walk around the grounds of the campus and waterfront. The campus has many academic and office buildings. At the waterfront, visitors will find over 60 training vessels that are utilized by students for training, labs, and a wood shop. Tours of the campus occur Tuesday through Friday, including a walking tour, information session, and tour of the State of Maine training vessel.
