History: St. Dominic's Church was dedicated in 1833 to serve the Irish community in Portland. It was closed in 1997 and acquired by the Maine Irish Heritage Center in 2003.
Collections and Highlights: The Library at the Maine Irish Heritage Center contains over 5,000 books, as well as magazines, newspapers, CDs and DVDs. You will need to apply for a library card. They also have a world-renowned genealogy research center staffed with expert genealogists, the Maine Gaeltacht DNA project; and a museum and historical archives. The Carrickahowley Gallery is a virtual art gallery that exhibits works from Ireland, Irish Americans and more.
The Maine Irish Heritage Center’s John and Francis Ford Collection is a project and archive that aims at honoring the lives and artistic achievements of Maine's native sons, the Feeney brothers. The Brennan Archives is a digital archive of Joseph Brennan's 50-year political career.
Exhibitions, Events & Programs: The Maine Irish Heritage Center features Book Talks presented through YouTube. This brings fascinating talks from authors on a variety of Irish topics. The store also sells Irish food products. Check the website for what is available. These can be reordered but must be picked up in person.
Rentals: The Irish Heritage Center is available for rental for your special event. You can rent The Great Hall, The Reception Hall, The Library or The Brides Room. This former church is a perfect venue for weddings, but beyond that, it has the space to host many other gatherings. Season/Hours of Operation: The Library is open to the public on Thursdays from 10 am to 2 pm. The genealogy center is open Friday 10 am to 2 pm.
Admission Fees: The fees for using the Genealogy Research Station is $20 for 2 hours. You should book your time before buying your credits. Membership gets a discount on many of the services offered. Individual membership is $60 a year.
