History: Presented by the St. Andrews Society of Maine, this annual event has been taking place since 1979. This festival is designed to promote the rich traditions of Scottish arts, language, and culture. Maine has the highest per capita percentage of residents with Scottish or Ulster Irish heritage and the festival is designed to help maintain their traditions.
Month Held: The Maine Highland Games & Scottish Festival is held annually on the third Saturday in August from 9 am to 5 pm.
Attractions: One of the most popular attractions is the highland dance championship, which features dancers from around the world in five different categories. If you prefer more action, armored fighters will be slugging it out. Music of all types is offered. From harps to pipes and drums to folk singers and even rock bands, music will be played throughout the day. Border collies will be featured in the sheep herding event. Bring your dancing shoes to take part in Scottish country dancing. A special clan village will provide information about the different clans. You can learn about your Ulster Scottish heritage as well. The athletic events offer competition for men, women, and children. Events include lifts, throwing, and feats of sheer strength like sheaf toss, stone put, caber toss, and hammer throw. Kilts will be on display and for sale. Lots of vendors, food, and drink will keep the entire family entertained.
