History: The Maine Granite Industry Museum was established by Steve Haynes. Haynes is a stone carver and wanted to preserve Maine and New England quarrying history. He started the museum with his personal collection of quarry granite samples, tools he collected, and photographs he found.
Collections and Highlights: The collection includes hundreds of tools used in the quarries and by blacksmiths and stone workers. Manufacturers such as Livingstone, H. H. Harvey, and Belfast Foundry all have tools on display. There are also hundreds of photographs, quarrying contracts, union badges, and other artifacts. A highlight of the collection is the stone samples that are from various states and quarries. The stone samples are used by many historical societies and architects for identifying granite types.
