SUMMARY: The Mahoosuc trails, including Mahoosuc Arm and Mahoosuc Notch, feature the most challenging sections of the Appalachian Trail. Many experienced hikers enjoy these trails for their beautiful views, rugged terrain, and the sense of accomplishment they feel upon completion. While leashed dogs are welcome, the trails are not recommended for dogs. Only the most athletic dogs can traverse these trails, as there are many scrambles and gaps.
MORE INFORMATION: Best Time to Visit: The best time to visit is from June to early October. Hikers won’t have to worry much about snow/ice during these months.

Parking: Parking is best at the Grafton Notch State Park or at the trailhead of the Appalachian Trail on Route 26. Hikers can also find parking along the road or in small pull-offs near Speck Pond.
Trails:
- Mahoosuc Notch Trail: This 17.6-mile out-and-back trail is quite challenging and follows part of the most difficult section of the Appalachian Trail. Terrain includes many rock slabs, mud, boulders, and dense forest. The trail also includes Old Speck Mountain and Speck Pond, making for amazing views.
- Mahoosuc Notch Loop via North Pond Road to Appalachian Trail: This 10.1-mile loop includes the most challenging mile of the Appalachian Trail. The trail is quite remote and rustic. Terrain includes lots of boulders, rock slabs, steep inclines, mud, wet rocks, and dense forest. The path is not well marked, so be sure to bring a map.
- Mahoosuc Traverse: This trail is 28.9 miles, point to point, and is very challenging. The trail follows the Mahoosuc Range, starting in Gorham, NH, leading to Old Speck Mountain, then towards Route 26 in Andover, ME. The terrain includes dense forest, steep inclines, downed trees, and mud.
- Speck Pond Trail: For a shorter hike, this trail is just 6.7 miles out and back. While short, it’s still challenging and best for experienced hikers. Terrain includes steep inclines, downed trees, and thick forest. The views of the water are beautiful along the route.
- Appalachian Trail - Route 26 to Carlo Col Shelter: Starting at Route 26 (Beaver River Road), this 12.6-mile point-to-point trail of the Appalachian Trail is another challenging option for hikers. The trail passes by Speck Pond and goes over Mount Carlo. Many campsites are available along the route. Terrain can be rocky with inclines and forest.
Mahoosuc Notch/Arm Highlights:
- Many of the trails are remote and quiet, which means there’s a good chance you’ll come across wildlife. Look for many species of birds; deer, squirrels, skunks, bears, moose, rabbits, foxes, and more.
- Views along the trails are stunning, including mountains, caves, and foliage (in the fall).
