History: Established by the University of Maine's Horticultural Professor, Lyle E. Littlefield in the 1960s, the focus of the Garden is research and teaching. In 1989, the garden was redesigned and enhanced with over 42 native plants. Researchers focus on evaluating plant life for hardiness, crop production, ornamental features, and landscaping factors.
Highlights of the Garden: Littlefield Ornamentals Trial Garden offers guests extensive botanical gardens, benches along the pathways, a garden pavilion, lilac hedges, and flowering trees. You can also see over 200 crabapple varieties, 150 types of rhododendrons, 180 varieties of lilacs, and 35 magnolia trees.
Events & Programs: According to the University of Maine's policies, the garden cannot be reserved or used for events, such as weddings, social events, and parties.
