SUMMARY: The Loring Military Heritage Center, also known as the Loring Air Museum, preserves the history of Loring Air Force Base. The base is no longer active, but visitors can imagine what life was like at the base by seeing all of the buildings and the runways. Inside the museum, a small collection brings the story of the Air Force Base to life.
MORE INFORMATION: History: The United States military used Loring Air Force Base from 1953-1994. The base was named for Medal of Honor recipient Charles Loring. In 2005, a group of volunteers established the Loring Military Heritage Center at the Loring Air Force Base bank building. The Center eventually moved to a larger space in a former garage located on the base.
Collections and Highlights: The collection includes a KC135 jet, a Hound Dog missile, photographs, documents, stories, and historical displays that detail life at the Loring Air Force Base.
Exhibitions, Events & Programs: Each year, the Loring Open House takes place at the base. The event includes a flyover by the Air Guard, dinner and dance, a tour, scavenger hunt, and other fun activities.
