History: In 1976, Dr. Richard Churchill, Jr. designed the Longfellow Arboretum as a bicentennial project. It's located in Payson Park and originally featured 11 trees, which represented the 11 founding families. Today, the arboretum has grown to include 100 native and exotic woody shrubs and trees. It is a level 1 ArbNet-accredited arboretum.
Highlights of the Garden: The Longfellow Arboretum is home to a wide variety of shrubs, such as lilac, dogwood, rhododendrons, hydrangea, and azaleas. It also features native and exotic trees, an oak forest, and a tidal marsh. A few of the native trees and plants include several birch varieties, maples, firs, cypress, cedar, dogwood, yellow wood, golden raintree, larch, tulip tree, hemlocks, oaks, and pines. All the specimens are labeled, so visitors can easily identify them.
