SUMMARY: St. Agatha in the far north of Maine is the location of the largest ice fishing derby in the state, the Long Lake Ice Fishing Derby.
MORE INFORMATION: History: The first Long Lake Ice Fishing Derby was launched in January 2006. The event’s overwhelming popularity led to it becoming a fixture in the community and in Maine. The money collected is donated to charity after prizes are given out. This event attracts more than 1000 ice fishermen.
Month Held: The Long Lake Ice Fishing Derby takes place on the last weekend of January, on a Saturday and a Sunday.
Attractions: This weekend is all about winter and ice fishing. More than $45,000 in cash and prizes will be given out. This is a weekend that is designed to foster a love of ice fishing in the next generation of anglers beyond just the prizes. Fishing for the derby is allowed in Carr Pond and St. John River, Long (St. Agatha, T17R3, T17R4, Madawaska), Cross, St. Froid, Square, Eagle, Glazier, Beau & Portage Lakes. These are the only locations that are eligible for derby prizes.
