Lake Wood is one of the few freshwater bodies where swimming is allowed at Acadia National Park. While most of the lakes and ponds are drinking water supplies, Lake Wood allows swimming in the summer. The big question dog owners have is this—do dogs at Lake Wood's beach area have to follow the same seasonal restrictions as more heavily visited Echo Lake Beach?
Lake Wood Beach Dog-Friendly Details
Lake Wood is off a side road and a small trail that starts at Crooked Road and Lake Wood Road. You don't have to go through the Hull's Cove Visitor Center to get here.
We can confirm after talking with park officials that there aren't seasonal dog swimming restrictions at Lake Wood's beach area, aside from dogs being required to be on a leash, even when swimming. There are no off-leash areas in any part of Acadia National Park.
You must clean up after your pet immediately. One of the main motivators for dog access to the beaches of Acadia is that visitors complained of untrained pets and excessive pet waste. Cleaning up after your pet means bagging the waste, carrying it with you, and disposing of it in a trash can approved for pet waste.
Responsible pet owners can earn their dog the treasured BARK Ranger status and can keep the dog access available to this special swimming hole. As this lake draws more people, the rules could change, so it always makes sense to ask at the visitor's center.
Lake Wood Beach Dog-Friendly Amenities
You won't find any amenities here. This is a natural area with not so much as a portable toilet. Bring your own drinking water, bowls, towels, and pet waste bags.
The biggest benefit here is that dogs are allowed at the peak of summer when other beaches restrict dog access between mid-May through mid-September.
Is Lake Wood Beach Safe for Dogs?
This is a popular area for kids to swim, so your dog should be able to stay calm with loud, splashing kids around. You should also let kids know the rules for approaching your dog.
The water quality should always be a concern, and you should know the signs of blue-green algae. Other owners who haven't properly disposed of waste could cause water quality issues for your pet. Even though this is a freshwater lake, your dog should still not drink the lake water.
Lake Wood's water is never more than 11 feet deep, which could make it a breeding ground for leeches. Several people have reported leeches in the water here. Ticks are an issue in the woods, so bring a tick-removal kit with you anytime you take your pet through Maine's many trails.
Parking at Lake Wood Beach
A small, free parking area is located at the start of the short trail from the road to the beach. Please note the road to the parking area is not serviced in the winter and doesn't open until June 1.
What's Near Lake Wood Beach
The Bar Island Trail is nearby in Bar Harbor, with a sandbar that takes you from the town to an island offshore. Of course, there are also all the trails and adventures of Acadia waiting for you here.
