History: In 1964, Peter Willauer started Outward Bound, which was to be a special camp that was based at sea and islands. The camp’s summer base was located on Hurricane Island. A mountain base was later added at Newry. The unique school started as one location and quickly expanded into other areas, including three Maine locations.

Ages: 13-18. There are a few options for adult-only courses too.
Specialties: Classic courses such as navigation, using maps, nature and survival skills and teamwork are taught to middle school students. Additional activities include backpacking, fire starting, rock climbing, crafts, cooking, and sailing.
Excursions to choose from include: Maine Appalachian Backpacking & Canoeing, Maine Coast Sailing, Penobscot Bay & Island Sailing, Maine Sailing & Sea Kayaking, Maine Sailing & Backpacking, and Penobscot Bay & Islands Sailing for Girls.
Camp Sessions: Camp sessions can range from a couple of days to a few weeks, depending on what students choose.
Cost/Tuition: Prices vary depending on the courses students enroll in. Expect to pay from $3,000 to $8,000 per course. Tuition includes insurance, permits, technical gear, food, utensils and necessary transportation.
