History: The Hackmatack Playhouse was opened in 1972 as a summer stock theater. Clement Guptill dreamed of having a place where the local community in Berwick could gather together and enjoy live theater. His barn became the home for many plays, musicals, and gatherings. The farm has been in the Guptill family for 11 generations, dating back to the 1680s. In 2022, it was believed that the theater was going to close and a front porch bluegrass summer series was added to the offering. But, the theater has survived.
Highlights: This theater is in the barn on a working farm. Bison are raised here and there is a farm store that is open on Saturdays.
Tickets: Individual ticket prices range from $15-$40.
Season/Days/Hours of Operation: This is a summer theater that holds performances in an old barn. The season is July and August with shows taking place Thursday-Saturday with both evening and matinee performances.
Kid-Friendly: Hackmatack Playhouse has two summer theater camps- a traditional theater camp for ages 7 to 13, and a Future Theater Professionals camp, for ages 12 to 16.
Food Service: The concession sells cold drinks, coffee, homemade blueberry pie, candy, cookies, and other snacks during intermission.
Parking: Plenty of free parking on the farm.
