SUMMARY: The Greater Grand Isle Historical Society preserves the history and heritage of Grand Isle, Maine. It has a wonderful museum with an underground tunnel connecting to the church next door. In addition to the museum, the Historical Society owns and operates the Mont Carmel Rest Area and Chapel. The Mont Carmel Rest Area has picnic tables, a memorial to the cemetery that once stood there, and a grotto. It’s a nice place to stop and enjoy a peaceful moment.
MORE INFORMATION: History: The Greater Grand Isle Historical Society is housed in what was once St. Gerard Rectory. The museum has an underground tunnel that was used by the priests of St. Gerard’s to escape bad weather. The priests could simply walk through the tunnel from the rectory right into the church. The Mont Carmel Chapel was built in 1846 and was intended to be a community church. The chapel was never completed but still stands today. There was also a cemetery which was relocated in 1951.
Collections and Highlights: The collection at the museum includes many funeral cards, local and religious artifacts, photographs, documents, and records. A highlight of the collection is a 6 HP gasoline engine that was used on a family farm in Madawaska.
