MORE INFORMATION: History: Fort Loyal was a colonial settlement established in 1680 by British settlers. The fort was built to provide a military-like presence to defend against enemies. It had blockhouses constructed of wood with guns for protection. The fort was taken by the French and Native Americans in 1690 and was then destroyed in 1716.
The fort was rebuilt in 1742 and at that time the name was changed from Fort Loyal to Falmouth Fort.
A placard was placed in 1936 by the Daughters of the American Colonists to commemorate the settlement.
