MORE INFORMATION: History: The Ellsworth Historical Society was established in 1978 after a publication in the Ellsworth American called for those interested in preserving the history of Ellsworth to join the group. The Ellsworth Historical Society Museum was created when the society leased and later purchased the Hancock County Sheriff’s Home and Jail. The Hancock County Sheriff’s Home and Jail was built in 1885 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Collections and Highlights: The museum displays Ellsworth's historical artifacts, documents, and photographs. There is also civic artwork on display. The highlight of any visit to the Historical Society is getting to see the inside of a historical jail. Original jail cells have been restored for visitors to experience. The jailkeeper's home has original furnishings and decorations for visitors to get a glimpse into the home life of a jailkeeper.
