History: The land that the sanctuary is on was acquired by Maine Audubon in two installments, one in 1975 and another in 1981. It was donated by the residents of Biddeford Pool.
Wildlife Species: East Point Audubon Sanctuary is known as a prime birdwatching area, and you should bring along your binoculars. Every season will bring exciting bird viewing with over 250 different species having been spotted here. Some birds you may see are snowy owls, common elder, spotted sandpiper, gray kingbird, red-necked grebe, and Canada goose.
Recreational Activities: The sanctuary provides unique access to this land and offers a short but spectacular hike with what many consider the finest bird watching in southern Maine. Benches are located along the trail to provide a place to sit and enjoy the views of the Woods Island Lighthouse, Saco Bay, and potentially seabirds.
Trails: The trail at East Point Audubon Sanctuary goes around the perimeter of the point. If you take the trail as far as possible it is a 1.6 mile trek in and out. If you just go to the point and back it is less than a mile. Even the longer hike can be done in under a half hour and offers views worth enjoying.
On-Site Amenities: There are no amenities.
Season: East Point Audubon Sanctuary is open year-round from dawn to dusk.
Fees: The sanctuary is free to visit.
Directions & Parking: Take I 95 north and get off in Biddeford. Head north on Route 1 to Route 208. Go east on 208 to Lester B. Orcutt Blvd. About 6 parking spots are located along the right shoulder at the end of Lester B. Orcutt Blvd.
