If you take the hike to Dunn Falls in Andover, Maine, you'll get two sections of impressive falls with cascades along the way while walking in the famed steps of the Appalachian Trail.

This trail is a beauty, but it requires smart navigation as you'll catch up with the Ellis River and have to navigate a series of A.T. white blaze markers and then blue blazes to reach the falls. You can also just use the Cascade Trail to go out and back without covering the A.T. stretch.

Dogs do need to be on a leash on this trail, which will be helpful as you approach steeper trail sections the deeper into the hike you go. Don't get disappointed with the cascades you see along the way—there are two monster waterfalls with mesmerizing drops waiting for you.
There are swimming holes along the way as you go, with some pools 80 feet round.
Waterfall Safety
The trail to get here is wooded and can be muddy and littered with rocks, roots and moss. Use bug spray in the warmer month since the bugs are thick here. Ticks are troublesome, too. Even with your pet on a leash, do a full-body scan when you're done.
There's a 99% chance you won't be able to resist getting the best views of the different falls, which will mean some walking on slippery rocks, scrambling, and rock hopping. You might even have to walk through a section of the river to get your feet wet. Plan accordingly.
Notice from the photos that the dark rocks covered in moss are beautiful but will also be super slippery. Don't try to climb the waterfall. Just enjoy the view from the scenic spots on the trail or from the water below.
You should never drink water from freshwater streams or rivers in Maine. Even if it looks clean there could be algae or toxins dangerous to you and your pet.

Parking at Waterfall
From Andover Village, turn left onto Upton Road (which turns into East B Hill Road quickly). In 8.3 miles, you'll see a gravel parking lot just right of the trailhead.
