SUMMARY: Dorr Mountain in Acadia National Park is a hidden gem often overlooked in favor of the more well-known Cadillac Mountain. It is Acadia’s second-highest peak at 1,270 feet. The summit offers views of Frenchman Bay and nearby mountains. Dorr Mountain offers lower crowds, amazing views, several trails, and picturesque landscapes. Trails range from easy to challenging, making this a great location for beginners and advanced hikers alike. Located on Mount Desert Island, the mountain was named for George B. Dorr, who was considered the Father of Acadia.
MORE INFORMATION: Best Time to Visit: Peak season is summer through the fall foliage season (October). For lower crowds, consider visiting in the early spring.
Season/Hours of Operation: Open for hiking from spring through fall, dawn to dusk. An entrance fee to Acadia National Park is charged.
Parking: There are several parking options depending on which trail you’re visiting. The closest options include: Sieur de Monts Nature Center lot, Sand Beach lot, and Park Loop Road.
Door Mountain Trail Highlights:
- Dorr Mountain Ladder Trail: A challenging 1.3-mile trail featuring ladders, steep ascents, and uneven terrain. Dogs are not allowed on the Ladder Trail to Dorr Mountain, due to the iron rungs, ladders, and many steep sections.
- Emery Path: Easy trail that is just under 1 mile across rocky terrain. This path connects with the Schiff Path and Kurt Diederich’s Climb. Dogs are allowed.
- Homans Path: A historic trail with beautiful stone and masonry features. Dogs are allowed.
- South Ridge Trail: A moderately challenging 1.1-mile trail through woods and by cliffs. Dogs are not allowed.
