History: The Common Ground Fair began as a harvest celebration in 1977. Originally located at the Litchfield Fairgrounds, by 1981 the fair had outgrown that location and the Windsor Fairgrounds were rented for many years. In 1996, 200 acres were purchased in Unity and the new education center opened on the same day as the Fair began on September 25, 1998. Every year, the fair image changes, and a contest is held to determine the winning design.
Month Held: The Common Ground Fair is held in late September every year.
Attractions: Speakers and demonstrations are an important part of this fair. The Children's Area has continual activities, demonstrations, and educational opportunities. A donkey and mule show and a draft horse show are offered in the ring. The Exhibition Hall shows the fruits of the labor of the Maine farmers; heirloom produce, eggs, and honey. Live entertainment is offered all weekend at the amphitheater, spotlight stage, and children's stage. A popular favorite is the Harry S. Truman Manure Pitch. Fun is had by all. The Maine Folk Traditions tent offers a look at what makes Maine so special.
Lots of delicious food is available for purchase. All food must be sourced locally, be organic, and have no added sugar. You can enjoy your favorites: hot dogs, French fries, and fried dough. Pie cones are a returning favorite and come in all your favorite pie fillings. Get adventurous and try the tofu fries, veggie burgers, or butternut squash pizza.
