History: The resort first opened in 1872 under the direction of Captain Theodore Weare’s wife, Elsie Jane. Elsie Jane invested her money to buy Bald Head Cliff and then had her brother, Captain Charles Perkins, design and build the Cliff House. In 1910, ownership was transferred to her sons, Charles and Edward T. Weare. The Oceanview Annex was then built.

Recreational Activities: There’s plenty to do at the resort, including visiting the curated art gallery, taking an art class with the resident artist, participating in a fitness or cooking class, watching a movie at the on-site Hartwig Theatre, enjoying s’mores around the fire pit, or visiting the history hall.
Off-site activities include kayaking, canoeing, swimming at nearby beaches in Ogunquit, Wells, or York, fishing, hiking, and skiing in the winter. The Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge has dozens of trails to explore, and Mt. Agamenticus is great for hiking or driving to the top for amazing scenic views. Ogunquit is filled with shops and restaurants and bustling with activity, especially during the summer months.
