SUMMARY: Champlain Mountain is a popular, breathtaking mountain featuring rock stairways, pink granite, and summit Frenchman Bay views. The mountain is located on Mount Desert Island and can be accessed via Beachcroft, Beehive, Sand Beach, or Precipice trails. Peregrine falcons nest on the mountain, so certain trails have restrictions to protect the birds. Be sure to bring binoculars to catch a glimpse of gorgeous native birds and wildlife!
MORE INFORMATION: Best Time to Visit: Late spring, summer, and early fall are the best times to visit for nice weather and fall foliage. Precipice Trail is best to visit from late August to October.
Season/Hours of Operation: Most trails are open year-round, dawn to dusk. The Precipice Trail is closed in spring and early summer due to peregrine falcon nesting. An entrance fee to Acadia National Park is charged.
Parking: Parking is available at the Beachcroft Trailhead or the North Ridge parking lot (off of Park Loop Road). Visitors can also park at Sand Beach and start at the Beehive Loop.
Champlain Mountain Trail Highlights:
- Beachcroft Trail: This trail is 2.4 miles round trip and is considered moderately challenging. Dogs are allowed on this trail but must be leashed.
- Beehive Loop Trail: This rung and ladder trail is 1.4 miles round trip and moderately challenging. It includes granite staircases, iron rungs, and cliffs. Dogs are not allowed on this trail.
- Precipice Trail: This trail is 1.6 miles and includes ladders, cliffs, and iron rungs. It is considered a very challenging trail for experienced hikers. Dogs are not allowed on this trail.
- North Ridge Trail: This trail is moderately challenging and is 2 miles long. Offers stunning water views and nice scenery. Dogs are allowed on this trail but must be leashed.
