History: Center for Furniture Craftsmanship was founded by Peter Korn in 1993 in a barn behind his home. In 1996, it moved to its current location and expanded beyond a summer workshop program. As the popularity of the school grew, more studio and workshop space was added.
Workshops / Training / Programs: Nine-month comprehensive programs are offered. It ranges from fundamentals to the fine points of furniture design. This program requires acceptance into the program. Fellowships are also offered. A 12-week furniture-making intensive is offered as well as an eight-week turning intensive. Workshops are one or two-week programs that cover a variety of woodworking skills including furniture making, turning, carving, and finishing. These are first come first served opportunities.
What you need to know: While the workshops and other programs require that you find lodging in the area, it is not provided by the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship. You need to be 18 years of age to participate. Classes take place Monday -Friday from 9 am to 4:30 pm. Having a vehicle is a necessity to get around.
Events: The Messler Gallery on campus has changing exhibits that feature the works of current students, faculty, and other woodworkers. It is a great outlet for the many talented artists in wood from around the country offering juried exhibitions, traveling shows, lectures, and invitational exhibits.
Tours for Visitors: Visitors are always welcome on campus. If you arrive during regular business hours, Monday-Friday, stop in at the office and a tour will be provided of the gallery and the campus. The Messler Gallery is open Monday-Friday from 9 am to 5 pm. This is not an organized tour but a personal tour to introduce you to what the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship has to offer.
