Causeway Beach in Deer Isle, Maine, is right along the connecting road between Deer Isle and Little Deer Isle. This property is managed by the Island Heritage Trust and is one of the dog-friendly locations of the conservation organization.

Causeway Beach Dog-Friendly Details

Dogs are allowed on Causeway Beach on a leash or under voice control. There are no seasonal or hourly restrictions. It's a year-round access point right off the causeway (Route 15/North Deer Isle Road).

PLEASE NOTE: The nearby preserve of Scott's Landing does not allow dogs to protect the delicate habitat.

You won't find any amenities here, so bring your own pet waste bags and drinking water. Please pick up immediately after your pet deposits waste and carry it with you. Do not "bag and drop" waste.

TIP: Maine dog-friendly locations put a lot of trust in owners to be responsible. Dropping bagged waste impacts the scenic views, water quality, and safety of the beaches.

Is Causeway Beach Safe for Dogs?

Go at low tide, so you have the most beach access possible since this beach is right along a major roadway. On Maine's islands, beaches, and peninsulas, it's critical to know the tide schedules.

The beach is often filled with seaweed, which does should not be allowed to eat or play with for its digestion dangers. The seaweed is filled with saltwater and potential other toxins that can cause mild to major health issues for dogs.

This beach has a mix of rocks, coarse sand, and tidepools, so it's smart to do periodic paw pad checks for cuts and worn padding.

Parking at Causeway Beach

Causeway Beach has one of the four parking areas for the Island Heritage Trust and Deer Isle access points. Please follow the road signs and do not park on the tidal flats at low tide, or else your car could be carried away or submerged by the tide.
