History: Belfast was settled by Scottish and Irish families who relocated from New Hampshire. The Belfast Historical Society was established in 1955.
Collections and Highlights: The collection includes maritime artifacts and photos, paintings by Percy Sanborn, a 19th-century Apothecary with a pharmacist's bench, There’s also information regarding Captain Albert W. Stevens, the Belfast Baseball league, items made in Belfast, and old ship models. The Museum Barn holds a horse-drawn hearse from the 19th century and a two-cell jail.
Exhibitions, Events & Programs: The museum has permanent exhibits, including The Story of How the Quilt Returned Home about a bed quilt made for the Union Army by some ladies from Belfast. The Historical Society participates in community events throughout the year. Check their Facebook page for upcoming events.
Tours: Self-guided tours of the Downtown & Waterfront, Church Street & Primrose Hill, and Museum in the Streets are all available.
