History: The Bar Harbor Historical Society was established in 1946 and housed in the Jesup Library. In 1997, the Historical Society purchased St. Edward’s Convent and was opened as a seasonal museum. In 2019, the Historical Society moved again and purchased La Rochelle, a gorgeous brick house that was built in 1902.
Collections and Highlights: The collection is divided into rooms at the Bar Harbor Historical Society Museum. The entrance includes the history of the La Rochelle estate. The foyer has Wabanaki and maritime artifacts. There is a dining room, living room, reception room, flower room, library, and the butler’s pantry. Highlights of the collection include whale sinew laces, sheep brushes, choker necklaces, vintage toys, a 1900s ballot box, and many photographs of the railroad and Bar Harbor pier.
Exhibitions, Events & Programs: Exhibitions are updated when new donations are received or for special events. The Bar Harbor Historical Society holds programs throughout the year.
