SUMMARY: Acadia National Park, located primarily on Mount Desert Island off the coast of Maine, was established in part through land and other donations made by John D. Rockefeller Jr. Between 1919 and 1931, Rockefeller, who was opposed to the introduction of automobiles on the island, personally oversaw the construction of a network of carriage roads on the island's eastern half, including sixteen granite bridges and two gatehouses. The majority of this network is now within the boundaries of the national park and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. In the summer, the carriage road network is open to the public for non-motorized uses such as walking and bicycling. In the winter, most of the network is open for cross-country skiing, and a portion of it is open for snowmobiling.

Its sister, Jordan Pond gate lodge, is just south of Jordan Pond House on the Loop Road. Both were built in 1931–32 by John D. Rockefeller Jr., and subsequently given to Acadia along with the carriage road system they served.
